How to use Devin to propose a proxy auth-chain fix
Devin reproduced a planted proxy-authentication chain in a sandbox and proposed a tested secret-gated patch, with human review and no deployed-fix claim.

Scan this deliberately vulnerable local API for authentication chains across files. Start and seed it in a sandbox, reproduce unauthorized identity-header access with curl, and let me review the finding. Propose a fail-closed trusted-proxy guard, negative tests, and deployment header-stripping requirements without merging the patch.

- Reported result
- Devin reproduced a lab authentication chain and proposed a proxy-secret guard with seven reported passing tests; the target patch was closed unmerged.
- Human involvement
- The tutorial shows human review of the scan model and assignment of a fix session. The target repository owner retained acceptance control and closed the patch without merging.

How the agent did it
- The human reviewed Devin’s application model for a lab repository with deliberately planted vulnerabilities.
- Devin reproduced the header-authentication chain through sandbox setup and local requests.
- A fix session proposed proxy-secret gating, negative authentication tests, and deployment instructions in a linked PR.
Nader Dabit’s Devin Security Swarm tutorial records a scan of Orbit API Demo, a deliberately vulnerable application. The setup contained an object-access bug, an attachment traversal issue, and a two-file authentication chain: one component trusted a client-supplied user header, while another trusted the resulting role.
The human reviewed the generated application model before continuing. Devin validated findings in a sandbox by starting the service, seeding data, logging in, and making local HTTP requests. A confirmed header-authentication finding was then assigned to a separate Devin fix session, which produced a linked pull request.
That proposal required a shared proxy secret before honoring X-Forwarded-User. With no configured secret, the header route was disabled and Bearer tokens remained the authentication path. Tests covered a missing secret, an incorrect secret, and the expected trusted-proxy request. The deployment notes also required the proxy to strip client-supplied identity headers.
The tutorial was merged, but the linked application repair was later closed without merging. The demonstrated result is therefore a reproduced lab finding and a tested patch proposal. It is not evidence of a production incident, assigned CVE, or deployed remediation.

Frequently asked questions
Was this a production vulnerability discovery?
No. Orbit API Demo deliberately contained planted bugs.
What did the proposed fix trust?
The identity header required a configured proxy secret; absent configuration disabled that route.
Was the application patch merged?
No. The tutorial merged, but the linked fix PR was closed unmerged.
