Claude to split expenses by actual owner

Phayanak wanted credit-card statements to answer a family question: who actually owned each expense? The person whose card paid was not always the person responsible for the cost. Personal, shared-family and business spending needed to be separated before settling up.

What happened

A corrected family expense allocation and calculations used for the author's subsequent transfer.

How the agent did it

  1. Create an eight-column sheet separating cardholder and expense owner.
  2. Classify spending provisionally and repair missing columns or formulas.
  3. Review the family allocation before a human settlement transfer.

Where a person stepped in

The author restored a script, challenged incomplete work and made the final money transfer.

Phayanak wanted credit-card statements to answer a family question: who actually owned each expense? The person whose card paid was not always the person responsible for the cost. Personal, shared-family and business spending needed to be separated before settling up.

Claude Code worked on a new sheet in an existing Excel workbook. The intended structure had eight columns, including a provisional expense owner, with merchant patterns and business markers helping populate the first pass. Uncertain classifications were meant to remain available for family review before the analysis was retained.

The account is especially useful because it records repairs. One attempt produced Markdown notes instead of the requested workbook changes and deleted a classification script, which had to be restored. Another script did not automatically ingest the statements; Claude Code read them and wrote the data. The owner column was missing from an early seven-column version, and the formulas initially still totaled spending by cardholder rather than expense owner.

After corrections and repeated terminal questions, the calculations and sharing were completed on May 19. The author made the resulting transfer on May 20. The agent did not move bank money. This is a spreadsheet reconciliation workflow with provisional classifications and human settlement, rather than an unattended statement-import or payment system.

Frequently asked questions

Why separate the cardholder from the owner?

The card used to pay did not necessarily identify who should bear the expense.

Was statement ingestion automatic?

No. The author reports that Claude Code read statements and entered data rather than using an automatic importer.

Did the agent transfer the money?

No. The author made the transfer after the calculations were completed.
