How to use Codex to repair an LED controller layout

Codex helped revise ArtNode’s power path and corrected false PCB spacing errors; the connected route still needed current, thermal and fabrication review.

Review this LED controller’s battery and USB power budget before routing. Compare modeled input current with connector, inductor and rectifier ratings. Cross-check rotated-pad geometry against native KiCad coordinates, keep simulation separate from bench evidence, and stop before fabrication until current, thermal and signal-routing review is approved.

Reported result
The revised board was connected and geometrically clean under configured checks, with corrected power components and a reusable checker fix; fabrication release and bench validation remained pending.
Human involvement
The owner kept engineering review open and documented unresolved current, thermal and critical-routing constraints; the reported clean route included local finishing.

How the agent did it

  1. The revision preserved mechanical anchors while correcting circuit connections and modeling the LED power budget.
  2. Codex’s work compared checker coordinates with native KiCad pads and corrected the rotated-pad transformation.
  3. Routing and local finishing produced a connected candidate, while source-current and physical qualification remained review gates.

The ArtNode revision kept an existing controller board’s outline and connector anchors while rebuilding its circuit and four-layer layout. Dan Newcome’s follow-up explicitly identifies Codex, working inside ChatGPT, as the agent on this project.

A modest LED test load exposed a larger battery-side requirement. The stress model estimated input current high enough to reject the previous inductor and rectifier. The revision changed those components, increased capacitance, repaired charger and interface connections, and added USB/battery load sharing. These were modeled design decisions, not measured operating points.

Another problem was in the checker. Seven apparent hole-spacing failures came from transforming rotated pads with the wrong sign. Comparing its coordinates with KiCad exposed the discrepancy. Correcting the shared geometry helper removed the false failures without moving vias to satisfy imaginary holes. Codex contributed the reusable checker and viewer improvements upstream.

The resulting route had no reported KiCad violations or unconnected items, after local finishing. Engineering review remained open: battery connector rating, USB source-current handling, thermal behavior and critical routing still needed resolution. The board had not been manufactured or bench-tested.

Frequently asked questions

Were the current figures measured?

No. The battery current was a stress-model result.

Why did seven spacing failures disappear?

A rotation-sign bug placed the checker’s holes at incorrect coordinates.

Was the board ready to manufacture?

No. Current limits, thermal behavior and critical routing still needed engineering review.

About this account

The revision preserved mechanical anchors while correcting circuit connections and modeling the LED power budget. Codex’s work compared checker coordinates with native KiCad pads and corrected the rotated-pad transformation.

Opened the October 3 build log and October 4 agent-attribution follow-up. Zero DRC and open-net counts concern geometry only. Board remained unmanufactured; simulated power cases did not qualify transients, charger termination or real temperatures.
